The Name Causes: Secrets of Soul Mazal

The Talmud learns that names mean something deep and significant, revealing its Mazal, by the Torah dictum know as שמא גרים which means "The name causes / generates."

One of the earliest written sources of this is found in the Talmud Tractate Berachot 7b:

"Ruth. What is the meaning of Ruth? — R. Johanan said: Because she was privileged to be the ancestress of David, who saturated the Holy One, blessed be He, with songs and hymns."
[Which are derived from the language "Ruth" / רות meaning to soak.]

"How do we know that the name [of a person] has an effect [upon his life]? [שמא גרים]
 — R. Eleazar said: Scripture says: Come, behold the works of the Lord, who hath made desolations in the earth. Read not shammoth, ['desolations'], but shemoth, [names]."

Interestingly enough, Ruth was originally named גילית  / Gillit  and when she became a Noahide, she changed her name to Ruth / רות ; Conversely this name would also facilitate her trek into Judaism, as this is not only her Noahide Name, but an eternal name as well.

Thus we learn from Ruth [and others] the great power and merit of the Name, and how it contains the Mazal of which one is given with the name.

This should not be confused with Mazal of the stars, for that is to suggest that one has no free will; rather the name is an expression of our relationship with Hashem based upon the root of the soul. The name is an expression of your spiritual self and the name is granted with Divine Inspiration. The naming process is one which is Blessed by God to grant the Divine stamp & Knowledge to the soul while meriting his/her name.

If the entire Torah is taught within the womb, the computation of that learning is given within the name as this soul's face of Torah, and therefore it is his perception of how God sees him/her.

Soul Mazal is not only for those with Hebrew Names:
