The Root Of A Jewish Soul: What Is In A Name?

A while back, I read into a man's name of which the last name was, "Gerbi."
What I found was, it came from Libyan origin (as he is a Libyan Jew), and literally had a connotation of a local Libyan, even as a Jew. When it came time to read the name over to the person, what came out, was that he was very strong in his Libyan roots, which was clearly seen in his name, "Gerbi."

To me at the time, it was quite novel, or in Hebrew, it was a חידוש/ chiddush.

Then  I came upon this article, which may verify my findings..notice the subject of the article and his last name: Gerbi!

-David Gerbi, a Libyan-born Jewish psychoanalyst, lived in exile in Italy for 40 years. He returned to Libya this past spring to assist the Libyan rebel forces during the uprising against Moammar Gadhafi.
Gerbi's dream in the aftermath of Gadhafi's fall was to restore Tripoli's old Jewish synagogue, and he claimed to have received permission from Libya's interim authorities, the National Transition Council, and a local Muslim cleric to proceed.
However, just two days into his internationally-noted effort, Gerbi's plan was stymied by threats of violence from a hostile crowd of Libyans who gathered outside the old Tripoli synagogue where Gerbi was praying, National Public Radio's Lourdes Garcia-Navarro reported in a sad dispatch from Tripoli.
"The building is not safe. The area is not safe. There are a lot of people armed. We don't know what happens. So the best thing for him is to leave," Hadi Belazi, a man in the crowd outside the synagogue, told NPR.
Though the Jewish community in the north African nation "dates back thousands of years," for the last half century, "there was virtually no Jewish presence in Libya," Garcia-Navarro reports. Libya's Jewish population emigrated in waves, after the establishment of Israel in 1948 and again after the 1967 war. The remainder were ousted after Gadhafi's rise to power in 1969.
Anti-Semitism was rampant in Libyan culture the last 40 years, Garcia-Navarro observed. Apparently it remains so, in the aftermath of Gadhafi's ouster, which was greatly assisted by NATO war planes and UN resolutions mandating the humanitarian intervention.
"They told me that if I am not leaving now, they are going to come and they are going to kill me because they don't want Jews here," a frustrated Gerbi told Garcia-Navarro, as his security guard whisked him away.
A spokesman for the Western-backed National Transition Council said that Gerbi did not have permission to restore the synagogue.
"It's an illegal act because he has not permission from anybody," NTC spokesman Jalal el-Gallal told NPR. "I think it's a very sensitive issue at a very critical time. You are inciting something by not going through the proper channels."
Gerbi, who is 56, provided psychological treatment to Libyan rebel forces during the anti-Gadhafi uprising, and was dubbed the "revolutionary Jew."

From Moshe Until Moshe

One day many many years ago, there was a lovely Cheder where wonderful young Torah scholars would learn with their Rebbe, and amongst them was a young Moshe Ben Maimon.

The Rebbe would call upon the boys with challenging questions, and one day the Rebbe asked a most difficult shayla...upon which the the young Moshe answered without hesitation.

Upon his completion of his answer, the Rebbe asked," is Moshe's answer correct?" to the class.

The boys sat in silence..until young Chaim, a very bright boy rose his hand and said, " My heavens no Rebbe! The answer is not so!"

The Rebbe was dumbfounded, and said, "Chaim, how could this bright answer to today's Talmud Passage not be correct by Moshe?" "To me it seems to be ok!"

Chaim without delay said, "Rebbe! Rebbe! come on!, we all know that we don't pasken like the Rambam!"

The moral of the story:
 A) its funny
 B) we basically DO pasken like The Rambam!

Learn good and do good teshuva for these Days of Teshuva.
May we merit Moshiach in 5772

What Year Is Geulah Again? And Where Is Moshiach?

Welcome to 5772. Ok, The Geulah was supposed to come in 5770,71...72?...73?...74?!?!?!
Don't worry Geulah seekers, Rebbe Yehuda in Tractate Berachos has explained for us the concept of Jewish Time!
עד ועד בכלל
and
עד ולא עד בכלל
These two terms are loosely translated as inclusive and uninclusive.
The principle works as follows:
In prayer, we can pray in the morning until the 4th hour on a perfect 24-hour day that starts at 6:00 AM.
Would that bring us to 10:00 AM?
The answer is NO! (HUH?)
We therefore count the time as follows: 6-6:59=1 hour
                                               7-7:59=2 hours
                                               8=8:59=3 hours
                                               9-9:59=4 hours
Thus we see, 10:00 AM never happens!
The other way would bewhen following the same model as above:
                                               6-7=1 hour
                                               7-8=2 hours
                                               8-9=3 hours
                                               9-10=4 hours
                                               10-11=5 hours...therefore until 10:59:59 = still the 4th hour!
These are the 2 examples of inclusive and uninclusive timing.
If we compare the two extreme times, we have a differential of almost two full hours (9-10:59=4th hour.)

The Geulah as we know was spoken of in the Zohar , as being a year ending in 70,71,72,73...
With this format, we can get to Erev Rosh Hashana 5775 and still be within 5773 according to this understanding. This is similar to what is said of the birth of Adam Harishon, as being born in the year "1" or "0"
Thus here we are in 5772, which can relate to 5771 or 5773...meaning we are at least right in the middle of the thick of things...right where we should be based on Chazal and world events/players.

Let's Hope 5772 is the year mamash of THE GEULAH!

The Zohar specifies the year 5772 in particular and often in conjunction with 5771 and 5773, in different places..and we have Rebbe Yehuda in Talmud Berachot to understand the math behind it all.

It is also Rebbe Yehuda that says the Taivah/Passion of Shabbos comes in at 3:00 sharp on Erev Shabbos:
This is exactly 3:00 PM on Friday, 9 hours into the day.
9 in Hebrew is תשעה....therefore, with the 9th hour would be: בתשעה...
To break down the year, the ה is 5000, ת/ש is 700,ע is 70, and ב in this context means with/in...Hence: With the 9th, ie. the time of Shabbos...and as we know, on our cosmic clock, we have hit 12:30 PM...the time that we can start to pray Mincha/Afternoon Prayer...a time that we officially begin to refrain from "working" and start to welcome the Shabbos into our lives after a long workweek...
For the Cosmic Clock analogy to work, 6 Days of creation (1 Day = 1000 years), we are at 12:30 Erev Shabbos.
We see from this..that many points in time are beginning to coincide on the same coordinates: All leading to Erev Shabbos/6th Day [cosmic/paradigm clock]...coming into the Great Shabbos..as we were promised that The Geulah would arrive before the year 6000...May we merit Moshiach this year...without any special arithmetic...straight up 5772...whatever that means.

Let This Be Our Year! 5772!
Moshiach Tzidkenu!

What's With Pollard?

US President Barack Obama had considered offering clemency to jailed Israeli agent Jonathan Pollard but was convinced not to by Vice President Joe Biden, The New York Timesquoted Biden as saying in an article published on Friday.

"President Obama was considering clemency, but I told him, ‘Over my dead body are we going to let him out before his time,’" Biden said. “If it were up to me, he would stay in jail for life.”

Biden allegedly made the statement during a meeting with rabbis in Boca Raton, Florida last week.

The US vice president reportedly made the comments when asked by one of the rabbis why Pollard had not been released.

According to The New York Times report, Obama is relying on Biden to help him retain the Jewish vote, seen by many to be slipping to the Republicans.

If you want the Jewish vote, then be normal and release Pollard!
Rav Mordechai Eliyahu zl has told us that the key to the Geula is Yonatan Pollard.

Bunker [or] Bust: All The Way To Iran

Is Israel finally going to go the distance with their propoganda war?

In late 2009, the Obama administration transferred 55 so-called bunker-buster bombs to Israel. The 5,000-pound bombs conceivably put Israel in the position to attack Iran's buried nuclear facilities--or to target Hezbollah's buried bunkers in Lebanon.
The revelation, first reported by Newsweek's Eli Lake Friday, received independent confirmation via a sensitive U.S. diplomatic cable released by WikiLeaks last month.
In a November 2009 meeting among senior American and Israeli military and diplomatic officials, "both sides . . . discussed the upcoming delivery of GBU-28 bunker busting bombs to Israel, noting that the transfer should be handled quietly to avoid any allegations that the USG [U.S. government] is helping Israel prepare for a strike against Iran," the leaked Nov. 18, 2009 U.S. cable states. ThinkProgress's Ali Ghraib first reportedon the U.S. cable.
Israel had earlier requested the deep-penetrating bombs from the Bush administration, Lake reported. But according to Lake's report, Bush had deferred the Israeli request, not wanting to give Israel a "green light" to bomb Iran. (However, another leaked U.S. cable discusses Israeli media reports suggesting the Bush administration transferred an earlier shipment of GBU-28 bombs to Israel, in 2005. "All media continued coverage of the forthcoming arms sale by the U.S. of GBU-28 bombs to Israel," an unclassified April 2005 U.S. diplomatic states.)
American policymakers had--and indeed have--many reasons to be wary of Israel initiating a confrontation with Iran--chief among them the roughly 150,000 American troops the United States currently has deployed on either side of Iran in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as other forces and assets assigned to bases in Qatar, Bahrain and elsewhere in the Persian Gulf region.
So why has the Obama administration seemingly reversed that call? After all, the Obama White House has sought to curtail Iran's nuclear program through diplomatic and economic measures--and the export of 5,000-pound bunker buster bombs to Israel would seem to severely test Israeli patience for that slow and frustrating effort. And, secondly, why is the information emerging now--nearly two years after the administration carried out the deal?
Some policy observers suggest that the U.S. military under Obama was trying to "hug Israel close," in order to increase its feeling of security and thus hopefully stave off the prospect that Israel might launch a surprise strike on Iran on its own, thereby wreaking all sorts of havoc with U.S. military and diplomatic initiatives in the region.
The reported transfer may have been a "gesture" by the Obama White House "to assure the Israelis we love them," one Washington Iran expert who insisted on anonymity told The Envoy via email. (Still, he confessed that he found the ultimate motivation behind the transfer mystifying.)
It's also worth noting that the pending U.S. transfer of the 5,000-lb. bunker buster bombs was discussed at a Nov. 18, 2009 meeting--approximately a week before Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced a ten-month partial freeze on Jewish settlement building in the West Bank that the Obama administration had sought. But there is no insinuation in the Nov. 18, 2009 cable of any sort of quid pro quo for the bunker buster deal. Rather, it was mentioned in the context of U.S.-Israeli discussions on approaches for dealing with Iran's nuclear program.
As to the timing of the revelation, while some observers have suggested that American officials may have leaked it in order to burnish Obama's pro-Israel credentials as he faces a tough 2012 presidential campaign, Lake himself, in an interview with NPR Saturday, discounted such a political motivation by his initial sources. Lake also said on Twitter that Obama White House officials were not among the U.S. and Israeli sources for his story. (Nevertheless, some Democratic Congressional staffers have eagerly circulated the Lake report, seemingly seeking to beat back the Republican narrative that Obama has not demonstrated sufficient support for the Jewish state.)
The simpler explanation may in this case be the more compelling one: American and Israeli officials initiated the disclosure of the information now to send a potent warning to Iran.
Such a message would be well timed, in view of other recent developments in the Iranian nuclear effort. Last month, Tehran announced that it had started moving nuclear centrifuges to a buried underground facility in Qom. American officials have been concerned that as Iran proceeds with transferring its enrichment program from its current Natanz facility to the underground Qom facility, Israel might choose to launch a preventive strike aimed at thwarting Iran's nuclear initiative before it becomes harder to target at the buried Fordo facility near Qom.
The Obama "administration is interested in sending message to the Iranians that we have lots of things we can do that are tougher, ... [that it] can ratchet up the pressure on Iran," suggested Patrick Clawson, an Iran expert at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, in an interview with The Envoy Monday. "The administration may be lifting its skirt a little bit to show some ankle."
(And in actuality, Israel has received earlier shipments of U.S. bunker buster bombs, analysts said. For instance, the Bush Defense Department announced in 2008 plans to sell 1,000 GBU-39 smart bunker buster bombs to Israel, "to develop and maintain a strong and ready self-defense capability," according to an Associated Press report. However, Israeli analysts said at the time that the smaller, 250-pound, precision GBU-39 bombs were more useful against buried arsenals in Lebanon and Gaza--not Iran: "You would need something a lot heavier" for Iran, former Israeli military strategic planner Shlomo Brom told the AP. "The GBU-39 can penetrate 6 feet of concrete, and 6 feet is not enough" for targeting Iran's buried nuclear facilities, he said. By contrast, analysts note that the bunker busters reportedly transferred in the 2009 Obama deal are 5,000-pound bombs--e.g. twenty times heavier than the ones the Bush administration shipped in 2008.)
Could the disclosure now that Israel has the means to strike Iran's underground nuclear facilities change Iran's nuclear decision-making calculus? It's hard to know with any certainty, given that so many factors that might influence such a decision are still very much in play.
But in a meeting with journalists in New York last week, attended by The Envoy, Iran President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad did not discount the possibility of an Israeli strike--and he warned harshly against it.
"The Zionists are quite eager to be able to damage the security of Iran," Ahmadinejad said through a translator at the Sept. 22 lunch with journalists, using "Zionists" to refer to the Israeli government. "It's their ultimate dream to be able to transgress against Iran. Certainly know Iran's response will be quite hard and it will be regretful for them. We assure everyone we will defend ourselves. I hope they avoid that fatal mistake."
Message delivered--and received?
